Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy in San Francisco

Some things don't resolve by talking about them.

Somatic therapy works with the body as well as the mind — with the tension, the bracing, the shutdown that stays after the story has been told many times. Five of our clinicians are trained in this work, and all of them are currently accepting new patients.

What somatic therapy actually is

Talk therapy asks what happened and what you make of it. Somatic therapy adds a second question: what is your body still doing about it?

Trauma, chronic stress and long-running anxiety don't only live as thoughts. They show up as a held breath, a clenched jaw, a startle that fires before you've decided anything. Those patterns were protective once. They tend to outlast the thing they were protecting you from.

In session that means slowing down and paying attention to physical experience alongside the conversation — noticing sensation, working with breath and movement, letting the nervous system finish responses it never got to complete. It is not bodywork and there's no physical manipulation. It's therapy that treats your body as part of the picture rather than a bystander.

People often come to this work when they've done talk therapy before and found it helpful but incomplete — when they can explain their anxiety in detail and still feel it in their chest every morning.

What to expect

A free consultation first

A short call to describe what's going on and hear how somatic work might apply. No commitment.

Matched to a clinician, not a waitlist

We match with attention to fit and to who has genuine availability.

Your first session is orientation

Mostly history and getting oriented. Somatic work builds slowly and deliberately; nothing happens faster than you want it to.

In person or by video

Every somatic clinician on our team works both ways — Union Street in San Francisco, or telehealth anywhere in California. Our Union Street office is not step-free, so if you need accessible access, telehealth is available with every one of these clinicians.

Insurance

Our somatic clinicians are in network with Aetna, Blue Shield of California, Cigna/Evernorth and Optum — coverage varies by clinician.

We check your benefits before your first session so there are no surprises.
